The Foundation's staff, Board of Trustees and an Expert Panel review proposals. Award recipients are announced at the Foundation's annual awards luncheon in February of each year.

The Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation was created to provide encouragement and financial assistance to composers, lyricists and bookwriters as well as nonprofit producing companies. Our current priority is on individual creative artists working in musical theatre.

Grant awards are based on merit and need, with particular attention to talent, commitment and dedication to an ongoing career in musical theatre. Average grant awards in prior years have ranged from $2,500 to $15,000.

INDIVIDUALS

Individuals may apply for general support for the ongoing development of their work, or support for a particular project. Collaborators who work together regularly are encouraged to apply as a team. United States citizenship is not a requirement, but you must be eligible to work in the U.S. and reside/work here on at least a part-time basis. Please refer to the FAQ for more information.

ORGANIZATIONS

PLEASE NOTE NEW GUIDELINES AS OF 2006: Organizations may only apply for project support, for the development and/or production of a new music/theatre piece. Beginning with the 2006-07 grant cycle, organizations may only apply for projects which include a JLPAF prior individual Award Recipient as one of the creative artists (as either composer, lyricist and/or bookwriter. Any Individual Award Recipient(s) associated with the project must have received their individual award at least 2 grant years prior to re-application -- i.e., if a composer received an individual award from the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation in February, 2006, he/she will be eligible for an organization project application beginning September, 2007 for an award in Feburary, 2008.

A list of individual grant recipients is available on this website. Preference is given to organizations that demonstrate a clear and ongoing commitment to the development and support of individual creative artists.

If there are any questions about project grants and eligibility, please contact the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation office prior to submitting an application.
